Insurance card
Blue Cross Blue Shield does not automatically send out insurance cards. To access a virtual insurance card, we are encouraging all students to download the MyBlue app.
After you have accessed your Verification of Coverage Letter, download the MyBlue app. Create an account to have access to your insurance card and all plan information through your phone.
If you prefer the physical card, please reach out to BCBS or visit the Gallagher Student Health website to request one.
Two Insurances
The Northeastern University Student Health Plan recommends that students only maintain one insurance coverage for the convenience of the student. That means that if your waiver is denied and you remain enrolled in NUSHP, it is recommended that you terminate the other coverage.
If a student chooses to maintain both the NUSHP policy and an additional insurance policy, please be aware that the NUSHP is always the secondary health insurance if a student has more than one policy. If you have two policies, please present both insurance cards at appointments and notify the provider’s office that NUSHP is your secondary insurance. If you have another insurance plan that claims NUSHP is the primary insurance, please present them with this benefit description explaining that NUSHP is always the secondary insurance if a student has multiple plans.
Your primary insurance is responsible for covering all of your medical claims first. NUSHP is the secondary insurance and will only be utilized if the primary insurance denies a claim. NUSHP is always the secondary health insurance if a student has another policy.
Update your address
Not having an updated address will cause your insurance to show as inactive. This update will be sent to Gallagher Student Health and Blue Cross Blue Shield.
Please allow up to 10 days for the change to update with BCBS.
- Go to the Student Hub at me.northeastern.edu
- Sign in with your Northeastern credentials
- Select Resources on the top right of the screen
- Select Miscellaneous, the last option on the Resources menu on the far right
- “Current Address Form” is the second option that will appear under Miscellaneous
Tax Forms
The tax forms related to your health coverage are the 1095-B form and the 1099-HC form.
1099-HC
The 1099-HC form is a Massachusetts state tax form that proves that a person had compliant coverage for Massachusetts residents. There are state tax penalties related to not filing this form, as Massachusetts residents are legally required to have health insurance. Blue Cross Blue Shield is responsible for issuing this form, and it can also be found on your MyBlue account. Any questions regarding the 1099-HC form should be directed to Blue Cross Blue Shield Member Services at 1- 800-262-2583.
1095-B
The 1095-B form is a federal tax form that proves that a person had compliant coverage. As there is no longer a federal tax penalty for not having health insurance, there is no need to file this form with your taxes. Even so, Northeastern will mail students their 1095-B forms by the end of March. If you have not received your form and would like a copy, we can issue an electronic or physical copy by request at that time.
